DPW Utility Operator

 

UNIT:  Department of Public Works

REPORT TO:

PRIMARY: DPW Manager

SECONDARY: Village Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the DPW Manager, this position is responsible for a range of labor-intensive tasks to support DPW operations including: water distribution, sanitary sewer collection and maintaining the lagoon system, grounds maintenance of Village owned property and streets as well as an array of tasks around the Village. 

Rate of Pay:

Based upon licensing and experience according to Union Contract between the Village of Lexington and the Operating Engineers Local 324.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions.  These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

Water Distribution/Sewer Collection: Experience in or the ability to learn the following

  • Ability to learn to troubleshoot problems hindering the operation and/or the delivery of public utilities
  • Ability to learn to operate the water distribution/wastewater collection system and wastewater treatment lagoons
  • Ability to keep accurate records
  • Ability to learn to operate the Wastewater Treatment Lagoons
  • Ability to learn to operate and maintain the wastewater collection system
  • Ability to learn to operate and maintain the drinking water distribution system
  • Ability to learn to maintain the streets under the jurisdiction of the Village to assure safe travel
  • Ability to learn to perform the duties of the Department of Public Works
  • Ability to learn to safely operate and maintain all of the heavy equipment that the village has at its disposal to carry out the day to day functions of the village
  • Ability to obtain at minimum the DEQ licenses of an L2 and an S4 within 24 months of hire date or 4 writing periods of the examination from hire date.
  • Ability to work in confined space and underground with proper training and safety equipment
  • Grass Mowing:
  • Operation of front mount mowing tractors
  • Operation of riding and/push lawnmowers
  • Operation of weed whip and/or lead blowers
  • Use of hand tools
  • Perform daily equipment maintenance (check oil/gas, tire pressure, clean equipment)

Brush Cutting:

  • Operation of chain saw and/or pole saw
  • Operation of hand saws/equipment

Daily Trash Rounds:

  • Empty trash cans and pick up loose debris on Huron Ave. and around town
  • Empty trash cans and pick up loose debris at Tierney Park
  • Clean and maintain fish cleaning station
  • Empty trash cans and pick up loose debris at Lester St. Park
  • Empty trash cans and pick up loose debris at Lexington Mobile Home Park
  • Clean bathrooms at Tierney Park
  • Pick up beach areas at Tierney Park and the Lexington mobile Home Park

Other Duties:

  • Operate municipal vehicles (trucks, tractors, loaders, etc.)
  • plow snow and operate snow removal equipment
  • Pull trailers with various municipal vehicles
  • Operate hand tools (digging, painting, cleaning)
  • Ability to perform lifting up to 50lbs
  • Dig or assist in burial services at the Municipal Cemetery 
  • Must be willing to work weekends & holidays, with some evening hours
  • Must be willing to be involved in various DPW projects: roofing, light construction, water line taps, sewer line installation, minor electrical
  • Other misc. tasks that the DPW Manager assigns to the employee

 

Candidates must not only be able to perform tasks such as these but must learn to perform them in a safe manner as to not only protect themselves and others but to maintain the integrity of the equipment.


Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Minimum Qualifications:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and minimum qualifications necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

  • Michigan Vehicle Operator’s License: CDL B or be able to obtain within 6 months of hire
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Exceptional attendance and punctuality
  • Ability to take orders and carry out tasks
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Able to operate and maintain all the above-mentioned power equipment and tools
  • Ability to work weekends holidays and evening hours
  • Ability to work effectively and safely under any weather and work conditions
  • Ability to represent the Village of Lexington in a continuously professional manner while carrying out a diverse range of tasks in public.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee’s environment can range from working inside to weed whipping in 90+ degree weather, to picking up trash in the rain.  Physical demands therefore could be quite intense and labor-intensive. This job requires the employee to be on their feet for most of the day while completing various job duties. The employee is regularly required to communicate with others in person and on the telephone or radio.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to adverse weather conditions, extreme heat, working from a ladder, working with power tools, working with heavy equipment, working around biosolids. This job will require the employee to work around the public as a representative of the village and is expected to carry out their job in a professional manner. The noise level in the work environment can range from quiet to very loud.

Must possess a valid driver’s license and must pass a drug test and background check.
